Cacabelos to La Portela de Valcarce

Yesterday was the second day of our 66 KM stretch that we had divided into 3 days. We made our way through the vineyards that line the path into Villafranca.

We found a great breakfast spot that served eggs and bacon. Abe and I split a plate before heading into the city.

Villafranca is a lovely city that is situated in a valley that is surrounded by hills on all sides. We met up with E, B and J and had another cup of coffee before heading further into the hills. Today there was a choice to go up a large hill or follow the flat road. B decided to do the hill and E, J and Abe and I decided to take the road. Although it was a choice that would be full of concrete, it would ultimately be an easier day.

Medieval pilgrims who were unable to continue on to Santiago could stop at this lovely church in Villafranca and still recieve their pardon. Some still refer to it as the 'Little Santiago'.

We left the city and followed this river all the way to our stop for the night, La Portella del Valcarce. We happened upon several fly fisherman who were fishing for trout in this mountain stream.

We stayed in the most awesome alberge where Abe and I got a room with a shower and bathroom attached, all for 18 euros. It was the best deal ever. There were only a handful of pilgrims in this tiny city (less than 10) and it was nice to have the albergue pretty much to ourselves. We had supper at the albergue since there was no other resturants in town. Abe got lintel soup and stewed rabbit and I got veggie soup and fresh trout. It was such a wonderful experience and now we are officially spoiled.

Buen Camino!
